Leadership Landscape Newsletter Redesign — Kansas Leadership Center
Refocusing a broad alumni newsletter into a strategic leadership brief
Context
KLC’s monthly newsletter, Leadership Landscape, had evolved into a dense, alumni-oriented update that no longer reflected the organization’s strategic direction. Leadership wanted a cleaner, more externally focused communication aligned with organizational priorities—while the communications team needed a more sustainable approach.
Challenge
Shift tone and structure without disorienting the audience
Reduce content while still signaling momentum and impact
Avoid exposing internal constraints
Create a modern, professional look without over-designing
Build a format that could be executed consistently with limited capacity
Approach
I repositioned the newsletter as a monthly leadership brief, focused on clarity, hierarchy, and restraint. The goal: a format readers could scan quickly while still understanding what matters, why it matters, and how it connects to KLC’s broader work.
Execution
I simplified both structure and visual design to reinforce clarity and reduce cognitive load.
Removed table of contents and long content lists
Introduced a streamlined format: CEO perspective, priority spotlight, KLC at work, and select “what’s next” items
Reduced promotional content and internal features
Limited visuals to 1–2 purposeful images per issue
Standardized typography, spacing, and layout in Mailchimp
Built a reusable template to support consistent execution
Outcome
Repositioned the newsletter as a focused, external-facing leadership brief
Improved clarity and scannability for busy readers
Shifted emphasis to partner impact and strategic work
Reduced production complexity and decision fatigue
Established a sustainable system for ongoing execution

Intensive Newsletter Redesign — Kansas Leadership Center
Restructured a multi-program newsletter to improve clarity, engagement, and long-term usability.
Context
KLC uses email newsletters to promote multiple leadership programs with different timelines and audiences. The format had evolved without a clear structure, making it difficult to update efficiently or guide readers to high-priority programs.
Challenge
Readers often dropped off after the first section
Program content lacked consistency and clarity
The format created friction for ongoing production
Approach
Reframed the newsletter as a guided narrative, not a list
Prioritized content based on urgency and strategic importance
Designed for early drop-off and scanning behavior
Built a repeatable structure for consistency and ease of use
Execution
Introduced a concise opening to frame urgency and preview content
Reorganized content hierarchy to elevate priority programs
Standardized sections for clarity and scanability
Simplified the template for ongoing use
Outcome
Created a clearer, more navigable reading experience
Addressed early drop-off through improved structure
Increased visibility for priority and new programs
Streamlined production with a reusable template

I’m known for how I show up in complex work:
I take ownership and stay aligned with the people involved.
I slow things down just enough to make better decisions.
I communicate clearly so people know what matters and what to do next.
I build structure that makes the work easier to sustain.
I stay steady when priorities shift or stakes are high.
